A professional headshot is a portrait focused on your face and upper body, expertly lit, composed, and edited to create a polished image that looks like you and represents you professionally. Most professionals use headshots for LinkedIn profiles, company websites, speaker bios, board directories, media kits, and other marketing materials.
In my experience, the strongest headshot is not necessarily the image with the biggest smile. It is the one where the expression feels natural, confident, and appropriate for how you want to be seen professionally. I work with my clients to capture the message they want to portray in their headshots.
What Qualifies as a Professional Headshot?
A professional headshot is not defined only by the clothing or background. It should include flattering, intentional lighting, strong composition, natural retouching, and an expression that communicates confidence and approachability.
The finished image should look current, polished, and appropriate for how you present yourself professionally. A headshot is usually tighter, simpler, and purpose-driven, with the emphasis on your face, expression, and professional presence.

When Does a Headshot Become a Portrait?
A headshot becomes more of a portrait when the image is designed to communicate more than the person’s professional identity. Wider framing, environmental context, dramatic posing, expressive styling, or a stronger storytelling element can all move an image into portrait territory.
I usually begin with the way the image is cropped. A traditional headshot is generally framed from around the middle of the chest or just below the neckline to slightly above the top of the head. Styling and intended use also matter. A glamour or fashion portrait may be cropped similarly to an executive headshot, but the two images serve very different purposes.
What About Actor Headshots?
Actor headshots differ from traditional professional headshots. They may include more dramatic lighting, varied wardrobe choices, and a wider range of expressions. The goal is often to suggest a particular role or create a portfolio that demonstrates the actor’s range.
