What is Interiors Photography?

Interiors photography is a subset of architectural photography and similarly, requires specialized gear, planning, and skill to translate a space from 3D to a 2D representation. Similar to exteriors photography, ambient light and the right time of day are important to best capture a space. However, interiors photography has additional challenges from color casts and a greater exposure range.

Lighting is used to complement the interior space, and not overwhelm it. Supplemental lighting helps with color, exposure, and adding depth. My use of flash is subtle to help address the interior challenges and to match the design intent of the space.

Colors casts are caused by reflections off of colored surfaces, environmental films on windows, ambient light mixed with various interior lighting which range from magenta to green, and yellows to red. With the broad use of LED and fluorescent lighting, accurate color is difficult for interiors photography without using supplemental lighting.

Supplemental lighting is used to add the color range that may be lost due to the artificial lighting. You can see how I handled the colors for this shoot in my Behind the Image post. The exposure range is usually larger for interior spaces due to darker inside versus the bright outside, so without supplemental lighting windows will have glare around them, and/or the interior will be too dark.

The key is to add just enough light to mimic what our eyes see, and maintain the original feel of the space. The third reason to add light to a space is to add light and shadow to better represent the 3D space in 2D imagery. Shadows and highlights add depth to an image, and sometimes supplemental lighting is needed to achieve the desired effect.

Frequently Asked Questions about Interiors Photography?

How is interior photography different from architectural photography?

While architectural photography typically focuses on building exteriors, structural elements, and the overall design intent of structures, interior photography concentrates specifically on indoor spaces. Interior photography requires different lighting techniques to handle challenges like color temperature mixing, exposure differences between indoor and outdoor light, and creating depth in confined spaces. Both require specialized skills, but interior work demands more complex lighting setups.

How long does an interior photography shoot take?

A typical interior photography session ranges from 2-8 hours depending on the scope of the project. Small residential spaces might take 2-3 hours, while large commercial properties can require a full day or multiple days. We never rush the process. Each space requires careful lighting setup, composition planning, and attention to detail to achieve professional results.

What should I expect during an interior photography session?

During the shoot, we’ll work systematically through each space, setting up professional lighting equipment to complement existing light sources. We’ll discuss the best angles and compositions for each room, handle any styling adjustments needed, and collaborate to understand your vision and design intent for each space.

Do you provide styling services for interior photography?

While we don’t provide full styling services, we do offer guidance on preparing spaces for photography. We can suggest minor adjustments like removing clutter, adjusting furniture placement, or optimizing lighting. For larger commercial projects requiring extensive styling, we can recommend professional interior stylists we work with regularly.

How do you handle mixed lighting in interior spaces?

Mixed lighting is one of the biggest challenges in interior photography. We use professional supplemental lighting to balance different light sources whether LED office lighting, natural window light, or decorative fixtures. Our approach is subtle, adding just enough light to eliminate color casts and create proper exposure while maintaining the original ambiance of the space.

What’s included in your interior photography packages?

– Professional lighting setup and equipment
– Expert composition and shooting

How much does interior photography cost in Houston?

We create custom quotes for each project. Projects can range from $750 to $5,000 depending on the complexity, number of images, production level, and if models are needed. Contact us for a detailed quote tailored to your specific project needs.

Do you travel outside of Houston for interior photography?

Yes, we travel throughout Texas and across the United States for interior photography projects. Travel costs are included in project quotes, and we’re experienced in coordinating logistics for out-of-town shoots. Whether it’s a corporate headquarters in Dallas or a hospitality project in Austin, we bring the same level of expertise to every location.

What’s the difference between interior photography and real estate photography?

Interior photography focuses on showcasing design intent, ambiance, and craftsmanship with artistic composition and professional lighting. Real estate photography is volume-based, designed to show room layouts and features quickly for property sales. Interior photography takes significantly more time per image, uses specialized lighting techniques, and produces portfolio-quality images suitable for marketing materials, awards submissions, and editorial use.

When is the best time to schedule interior photography?

The ideal timing depends on your space’s natural light and intended use. For spaces with significant window light, mid-morning to early afternoon often works well. However, our professional lighting setup allows flexibility in scheduling. For restaurants and hospitality venues, we can work around operating hours. We recommend scheduling after any construction or major styling is complete.

How do you handle reflective surfaces and glass in interior photography?

Reflective surfaces like mirrors, glass tables, and polished floors require special techniques to avoid unwanted reflections and glare. We use polarizing filters, adjust lighting angles, and sometimes composite multiple exposures to achieve clean, professional results. Our experience with these challenges ensures your interior’s best features shine without distracting reflections.

What file formats and sizes do you deliver?

We deliver high-resolution JPEG files optimized for both print and digital use. Images are typically delivered at 4500px (suitable for large format printing) along with web-optimized versions at 2048px.

How far in advance should I book interior photography?

We recommend booking 2-4 weeks in advance for most projects, though we can often accommodate shorter timelines. Larger commercial projects or those requiring coordination with multiple parties should be booked earlier. Peak seasons (typically spring and fall for commercial work) may require longer lead times. Contact us as soon as your space is ready to discuss availability.
